those managers who are pioneers in city development arena follow major strategies that can receive international attention, so they focus their attention to major sporting events. this study evaluated tehran as a metropolis that has plans for strategic development from the perspective of hosting major sporting events. in this qualitative exploratory study, data were collected with a checklist and semi-structured interview with chief sport managers and sport management professors who had experience of managing, participating or attending major sporting events and examining research background. results showed that tehran had weaknesses in infrastructure, transportation, accommodation and sport facilities for successful hosting of sporting events in comparison with hosting standards. also, human and management resources were not planned to properly suit major sporting events. also, economic and social situations and weather of tehran were other important factors for successful hosting of major sporting events. the analysis of findings showed that tehran had infrastructures to host single-field sporting events (such as wrestling world cup) and multi-field sporting events (asian games).
